Juupajoki

  • 1913
  • Population 2224
  • Total area 274,79 km2, water 15,81 km2

UPM-Kymmene Yhtyneet Sahat / Korkeakosken saha and JPJ-Wood sawmills, with a yearly production of 300 000 cubic meters. Army signal depot in Lyly. Helsinki University Forestry Field Station and Smear-II research station in Hyytiälä.

Mr Edward Wallenius founded a tannery in 1894 and a little later the first shoe factory in Finland in 1897 in Korkeakoski, because  the railway  between Tampere - Haapamäki had been built via Korkeakoski. Emil Aaltonen bought the factories in 1926. Nowadays the Big-L, a member of L-Fashion Group, best known as LUHTA, produces leather garments in the old factory building.

THE SIGHTS OF JUUPAJOKI

Kallenautio, in Hyytiälä (Road 66): an inn museum and a café with a pleasant and old fashioned atmosphere. A sales exhibition of local handicrafts and art. Kallenautio is open summertimes.

The centre of Juupajoki, Korkeakoski, was known for its rapids and shoe industry. Now the shoes are in the Koskenjalka Shoe- and Leather Museum. There is also Art Gallery, a café and a Big-L factory leather wear shop. A visitor can walk a short  path to the rapids ravine and see the old factories and houses in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake Tehtaanjärvi.

Trains stop in Korkeakoski (Juupajoki) three times a day (Tampere - Haapamäki)

In the village of Lyly there is an interesting army signal museum and a surplus store Lyvi. The museum is open by request, the store is open on Tuesdays and on Fridays 10-16.

The army veterans have built a wartime dugout "korsu" in the church village of Kopsamo.

All the Juupajoki museums have  free entry.

I LOVE JUUPAJOKI
